Tech Data snaps up HTC RE rights in Europe

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 21 November 2014

Tech Data Europe has been appointed as a European distributor for the new HTC RE camera. Tech Data Europe will supply major national and independent retailers and mobile network operators across Europe with HTC’s newest innovation in photography, which aims to allow users to step out from behind the viewfinder and capture high definition video and photos without anything getting in their way.

Stephen Nolan, senior VP at Tech Data Mobile, said: “Tech Data Europe’s appointment as distributor for the RE camera by HTC is a big opportunity. The RE is simply an amazing piece of technology innovation and one that is certain to be exceptionally popular. We will be drawing on our full capabilities and resources to ensure that retailers and operators can make the most of this excellent opportunity and maximise sales for HTC.”

Hervé Fontaine, VP global accounts and sales development at HTC, commented: “At HTC we never stand still and our desire to always innovate and be at the cutting edge of consumer technology now sees us taking digital photography in a completely new direction with the creation of RE. Tech Data is providing an agile and efficient distribution set-up, able to cover all European markets and we look forward to building a strong and successful partnership.”

HTC claims that the RE camera represents a completely new product category. With a high-resolution 16MP CMOS sensor that provides Full HD (1080p) video recording, and a 146-degree wide-angle lens, the RE is capable of capturing high quality footage in any situation.

The RE features a built-in grip sensor that instantly activates the camera on pick up, eliminating the need for a power button. Its single shutter button facilitates one tap photo-capture and a press and hold for video recording, so you won’t miss a moment fumbling between modes.

With the user in mind, HTC has ensured RE works seamlessly with any smartphone via the RE app – across Android and iOS – with complete control of all camera functions, including viewfinder, zoom, focus and shutter control, as well as wireless streaming.

RE also features slow-motion and time-lapse recording options as well as being completely waterproof, so it can be used in harsh weather conditions and even underwater. The RE app will also automatically back up video and images to the cloud or a phone, so they are always safe. In addition, in the future RE will also offer real-time video streaming to YouTube.

The RE comes in a variety of colours and is available for pre-order now via Tech Data’s InTouch website. It is expected to retail for €169 (US$210) in most European countries and £129 (US$202) in the UK.
