Consumer demand for touch-enabled notebooks grows

Four out of five Asian consumers would prefer to buy a touch-enabled notebook when they make their next purchase, according to the latest market research from IDC. The survey covered consumers in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Despite the overwhelming preference for touch-enabled devices, IDC noted that only 6% of notebooks shipped in the first half of 2013 in these countries featured touch screens. Read full story

Smart wearable devices market to hit US$19 billion in 2018

The numbercrunchers at Juniper Research reckon that the global market for mobile smart wearable devices will be worth US$19 billion per annum by 2018. Rapid growth in retail sales will be driven by high price points and strong demand for multifunctional smartwatches and smartglasses, according to the research house. Juniper estimates that the market for these devices in 2013 will be worth US$1.4 billion. Read full story

PC shipments climb in India

PC shipments in India hit 3.53 million units in the second quarter of 2013 – up 24% year-on-year. This also represented a 30.2% sequential surge compared to the first quarter of 2013, according to data from research house IDC. The consumer market showed growth in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of 2013. HP remained the dominant brand within India’s PC market. Read full story

UK consumer showrooming hits 10%

Omnichannel solutions specialist Omnico’s latest research showed that 10% of UK consumers have used their smartphone to buy a product from another retailer’s website while in-store. The survey of more than 1,300 consumers revealed that showrooming is a real and growing threat for retailers. Omnico claims that showrooming is here to stay and retailers must embrace omnichannel retail to defend their business from online threats. Read full story

Strong growth for Argentinean ICT & CE market

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Argentina indicates that the total market value for the second quarter of 2013 was US$2.25 billion – up 44.8% year-on-year. GfK’s research measures the size of what it terms the ‘technical consumer goods’ market, which includes the following product categories: consumer electronics; photo; major domestic appliances; small domestic appliances; IT; telecoms, office equipment and consumables. Rapid growth predicted for smartwatch shipments

The numbercrunchers at Juniper Research reckon that global smartwatch shipments will hit 36 million units per annum by 2018 driven by new multifunction device capabilities. Juniper’s crystal ball sees rapid growth for the nascent product category in the years ahead. For 2013, smartwatch shipments are expected to reach 1 million units. Read full story

GfK to deliver Russia & CIS market insight

Research giant GfK is an official Event Partner at next week’s DISTREE Russia & CIS channel event in St. Petersburg, Russia. The three-day event gathers 600-plus senior vendor, distributor, retailer and reseller executives involved in the regional ICT and consumer electronics (CE) channel. Ukrainian IT market value climbs in 2012

The value of the Ukrainian IT market grew 2.9% in 2012 to hit US$1.88 billion, according to research house PMR. The market was buoyant in the first half of 2012, but stagnated in the second half of the year due to macroeconomic factors. Expectations of a devaluation of the Ukrainian currency also resulted in some companies postponing planned IT investments. Read full story

Esquire adds Promate in South Africa

South Africa-based distributor Esquire Technologies has struck an agreement with peripherals and gadgets vendor Promate. Under the terms of the deal, Esquire will offer the full range of Promate products to its channel customer base in South Africa.
