IDC forecasts tablet boom in EMEA

The numbercrunchers at IDC have come up with a stonking growth prediction for media tablet sales in the EMEA region. The research house reckons that EMEA tablet shipments will hit 22 million in full year 2011 – up from just 6 million in 2010. Driven by the success of Apple’s iPad, major vendors are now queuing up to launch a slew of similar products. Read full story

Gartner raises global spending forecast

The numbercrunchers at Gartner have raised their 2011 global IT spending forecast to US$3.6 trillion – up 5.6% year-on-year. The new revised figures replace Gartner’s earlier forecast of 5.1% growth in 2011. One of the major reasons for the boost is the impact of worldwide spending on media tablets such as the iPad, according to Gartner. Read full story

Western European PC sales drop

The latest data from research house Context has shown a sharp year-on-year drop in PC sales in February 2011. Unit sales were down 5.8% as consumers shied away from netbooks and notebooks, according to Context. Netbook unit sales were down 24.4% while traditional notebook PC sales slumped 18.4%. The data released by Context did not state how much of this decline was due to the impact of tablet sales – most notably iPads – cannibalising the notebook and netbook segments. Read full story

Carapelli gets F-secure retail deal in UAE

Carapelli Computers has been appointed as an authorised retail distributor for F-Secure’s anti virus products in the UAE and Oman. The deal was confirmed by RAS Infotech, F-Secure’s VAD in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Read full story

VIP Computers’ recently launched Middle East operation has been named as an official regional distributor for Palit Microsystems. VIP Computers will hold Palit rights across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region. The deal builds on an existing relationship the two companies have in the UK. Soft fourth quarter for EMEA PC market

IDC’s latest EMEA research claims that the region’s PC market suffered a soft fourth quarter in 2010. The research house believes that growth in sales of new media tablets continued to have an adverse effect on consumer PC purchases. Cautious business investment meant that overall EMEA PC shipments were up just 2.4% year-on-year at 31.5 million units for the fourth quarter. Read full story
