Etisalat confirmed as DCC MEA 2009 platinum sponsor

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 6 April 2009

Etisalat has been confirmed as a platinum sponsor of Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East and Africa 2009. The involvement of Etisalat highlights the growing importance of the relationships between telecom operators, vendors and major retailers, to define and drive new routes-to-market for consumer and business solutions. DCC MEA attracts hundreds of senior retail channel executives.

“We are delighted to announce Etisalat’s participation as a platinum sponsor at DCC MEA 2009,” commented Farouk Hemraj, CEO at DISTREE Events, the organisers of DCC MEA. “We are seeing the emergence of new go-to-market models where services and subscriptions are sold hand-in-hand with hardware and devices through a wide variety of different channels.”

“Etisalat’s decision to sponsor DCC MEA reflects their energy and desire to lead the field in opening up new business opportunities across the region. I have no doubt that the delegates at DCC – both vendors and retailers – will be keen to explore how they can engage more closely with a company of Etisalat’s calibre,” Hemraj added.

Etisalat unveiled its strategy for the retail of mobile devices and terminals across 17 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East in late 2008. Etisalat announced that it would look to negotiate purchase contracts with international vendors and OEMs on behalf of its subsidiaries. The operator giant claimed that this strategy would provide great value for its consumers through lower priced devices and promotional bundles.

As a part of the strategy, Etisalat also plans to introduce its own range of telecommunications devices and handsets, which will be branded especially for Etisalat and its subsidiaries. Etisalat also declared that it would negotiate retail agreements with global leaders in mobile phones and devices to maximise its purchasing power and provide maximum value for its consumers.

Mohammad Hassan Omran, Chairman of Etisalat, stated: “Etisalat has successfully carved a position for itself within the list of the world’s most influential operators through our ongoing expansion strategy. The next phase in our growth is to activate synergies – whether this in terms of acquisitions, knowledge or in other areas.”

“Our corporate strategy is based on extending the reach of all of our customers, wherever they are living or travelling. Our retail strategy will support this by providing devices and technologies at an accessible price point,” he added.

Etisalat has been the telecommunications service provider in the UAE since 1976, and has built up a modern telecom infrastructure and established itself as an innovative and reliable operator. Etisalat stands 140th among the Financial Times Top 500 Corporations in the world in terms of market capitalisation, and is ranked by The Middle East magazine as the 6th largest company in the Middle East in terms of capitalisation and revenues.

The Corporation is the largest contributor outside the oil sector to development programmes of the UAE Federal Government, and is an award-winning socially responsible corporation. Etisalat has also won accolades from across the region for its nationalisation programme.

The fifth annual Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) event will take place from May 19th to 21st 2009. The region’s premier event for the consumer electronics (CE), communications and ICT retail channel continues to go from strength to strength, offering a compelling mix of one-on-one meetings, conference sessions, awards and networking opportunities for retailers, distributors and vendors.

Retailers will have the opportunity to review the latest products from the 50-plus vendors set to attend this year’s event. With retailers attending from 15-plus countries, attending DCC MEA offers vendors insight into markets across the region and the opportunity to accelerate or improve their go-to-market retail strategy.

The ‘Middle East Retail Academy: 2009 Awards’ Gala Dinner and live voting session will also take place at DCC MEA on 20th May 2009. The awards, which are held in conjunction with DCC MEA, recognise excellence in the region’s consumer electronics and IT retail channel. A total of 22 awards are up for grabs in 2009 with categories for vendors, retailers and distributors.
