The EMEA Channel Wrap – 27/11/09

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 27 November 2009

Your indispensable digest covering major channel news and announcements across the EMEA theatre has arrived. We pay a flying visit to some of the major in-country channel publications to round up the latest distribution developments within the vast EMEA theatre. We do the legwork; you sit back and get up-to-speed on 15 stories from across the region.

1) We’re heading first to South Africa where IT Web reports that Apple is opening up new iStores in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

2) Staying in South Africa, CRN covered the recent distribution tie-up between Lenovo and Axiz. The agreement includes Lenovo’s Think and Idea product ranges.

Middle East

3) From South Africa, we head next to the Middle East, where Channel Middle East has reported on Omani dealer Business Point’s decision to set up a trading operation on Dubai’s Computer Street headed up by ex-Asbis manager Sujith Sudhakar.

4) Kaspersky’s move to establish a sub-Saharan base with an office in Johannesburg is also covered by Channel Middle East. The antivirus vendor will use the office to get closer to business partners and resellers.

5) Iomega’s move to appoint Delta and VAS as in-country distributors in Egypt is also covered by Channel Middle East. Iomega already works with four regional distributors: Empa, ITE, Intuit and Al Jammaz.

6) Over in Oman itself, newly formed Cisco reseller ABIT, part of Al Barij International, has been awarded premier level certification from the networking giant, according to Channel Middle East.

Russia

7) From the Middle East, we head to Russia where the local CRN team reports that Russian distributor Bureaucrat has struck a distribution deal with HKC Electronics covering computer chassis and embedded power supplies.

8) Staying in Russia, CRN also covers a distribution agreement between Elko to sell OEM software from Microsoft. The deal covers operating systems for PCs and servers as well as office software.

9) CRN Russia also reports on a new distribution agreement between national channel powerhouse Merlion and A-Data. The vendor hopes that the tie-up will allow it to expand both its customer base and market share in Russia.

Europe

10) In the Netherlands, ChannelWorld reports on a distribution agreement between Ingram Micro and Case Logic. The distribution giant will carry a full range of Case Logic bags and storage solutions in its Dutch product portfolio.

11) Crossing the channel to the UK, Microscope reports that HP has appointed Paul Hunter as channel director for its PSG unit in the UK. Hunter replaces Dave Poskett, who held the position on an interim basis.

12) Hopping back across the channel, France’s ITR News reports that retailer Fnac has struck an agreement to resell products from accessories vendor Beewi. The products will be made available online and in retail outlets.

13) Heading East to Germany, Channel Insider carries news about a tie-up between Tech Data and Acer subsidiary Gateway. Tech Data will now carry Gateway’s professional desktops, notebooks and monitors in Austria and Germany.

14) Staying in Germany, Channel Insider also reports Actebis Peacock’s new distribution deal with Gemalto YuuWaa – a USB-based storage and back-up solutions provider. Gemalto reckons the deal significantly boosts its channel reach.

15) In the Czech Republic, Tech Data has been making news with ChannelWorld reporting from the distribution giant’s new logistics centre for Central Europe in Tachova. The facility covers some 48,000 square metres and employs 150 staff.

Well, that’s all for this week folks. Obviously we’re keen to expand the scope and remit of the EMEA Channel Wrap service on www.channelemea.com. We’re considering increasing the number of stories and we’re always on the lookout for the more sources of quality in-country channel news from across the region.
