The EMEA Channel Wrap – 04/12/09

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 4 December 2009

Your weekly digest covering major channel news and announcements across the EMEA theatre is back. We dig out our foreign dictionaries and plough headfirst into some of the national channel publications from across EMEA to tell you what’s making headlines across the vast theatre. Are you sitting comfortably? Here goes…

1. We’re in Russia first with the team at CRN reporting on the opening of a second hypermarket for electronics and home appliances retailer M.Video in Novorossiysk. The company has opened close to 20 new stores in 2009, according to CRN Russia.

2. CRN Russia is also reporting on a new business structure at distribution giant Merlion. In addition to its IT business, Merlion will now operate three separate product groups: mobile phones, audio video and electronics.

3. GPS device vendor Mio has also announced that it will open a centralised service centre in Russia, according to CRN. Working in association with Telemiks, Mio technical support will now be available not just in Moscow and St Petersburg, but across the whole of Russia.

Africa

4. Down in South Africa, distributor Mustek has filed an official complaint against HP with the Competition Commission, according to IT Web. Mustek’s complaints include price discrimination and resale price maintenance.

5. Staying with IT Web’s weekly coverage, the website is also reporting that South African VAD Blue Label Technology has been appointed as a distributor for Lenovo’s secure managed client solutions in Southern Africa.

6. IT Web has also covered Software AG’s decision to sign up Fynntech as a sales assistance partner. Fynntech will concentrate on opening up channels to smaller companies for the business infrastructure software vendor.

Western Europe

7. In the UK, Microscope covers Seagate’s ongoing rationalisation of its EMEA distribution channel. Microscope reports that Tech Data is the latest distributor to lose Seagate rights as the hard drive giant continues its radical restructuring.

8. Elsewhere in the UK channel, PCR carries an interview with Microsoft UK’s anti-piracy manager Michala Wardell. She claims that piracy is having a ‘catastrophic’ impact on the channel as consumer reports of counterfeit software surge 600%.

9. Over in Germany and Channel Insider covers the opening of Vobis’ newly designed online store. Customers can choose whether to have products delivered or pick them up in store - a system that is also now used by PC World in the UK.

10. Channel Insider also reports that Jens Lubben has been appointed as managing director for Germany and area VP for central Europe at Citrix. Lubben will oversee sales, channels and business development across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

11. Channel World in the Netherlands reports on a tie-up between Ingram Micro and Brother. The new deal will see the distribution giant add Brother’s printing products and solutions to its portfolio.

12. Staying with Channel World, the publication also reports that Copaco has signed an exclusive distribution deal with SilverStone Technology. Copaco will represent the vendor across the Benelux region, carrying a range of PC cases, power supplies and accessories.

Eastern Europe

13. Heading further East and ChannelWorld is carrying Gartner’s 3rd quarter analysis of the PC market. Unit sales slipped 12.2% year-on-year to 317,590 units. Top five vendors in order were Acer, HP, Asus, Dell and Lenovo.

14. ChannelWorld also covered the Slovak market results from Gartner for the 3rd quarter. Unit sales were up 15% year-on-year at 131,425. Top vendor HP almost doubled unit sales to 44,816. Asus picked up second spot, followed by Acer, Dell and Lenovo.

Middle East

15. Heading to the Arabian Peninsula and Channel Middle East is covering the theft of US$110,000 of hardware from a sub-distributor’s warehouse during the recent Eid holiday. Kit taken includes Seagate hard drives and Samsung hardware.
