‘ECA: 2010 Awards’ - VENDOR WINNERS

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 18 February 2010

The ‘EMEA Channel Academy (ECA): 2010 Awards’ vendor winners were revealed during last week’s action-packed Gala Dinner at Monaco’s Chapiteau de Fontvieille (also the venue for the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival). The awards, now in their second year, were held in association with DISTREE XXL – EMEA’s premier channel event. More than 800 channel executives rolled up to the big top for an action-packed evening of live electronic voting, circus acts, fine dining and channel networking.

More than 400 senior distribution executives used live electronic voting devices to select their preferred vendor candidates in eight award categories. In the months leading up to the ‘ECA: 2010 Awards’ thousands of distributors across EMEA were polled to draw up a shortlist of five nominees in each vendor category.

“The ECA Awards are a true reflection of how well a vendor has performed in the EMEA channel during the last year,” said Farouk Hemraj, director at the EMEA Channel Academy. “We would like to congratulate each and every one of the vendor winners at the ’ECA: 2010 Awards’. Their achievement marks them out as a preferred partner for distributors from across the EMEA theatre and is testament to the strength and success of their channel engagement model”

In the 2010 Desktop/Notebook Vendor of the Year category, Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba battled it out for supremacy. Lenovo secured a nomination for this category at the expense of Dell, which did not make the top five list in 2010. The remaining four nominees were unchanged from last year.

Asus won a close fought contest, picking up 26% of the vote and winning this coveted channel prize for the second year in a row. The success of Asus – both in 2009 and 2010 – clearly demonstrates that distributors are interested in much more than just pure volume when assessing the strength and sustainability of their relationships with PC vendors.

The 2010 EMEA Accessories Vendor of the Year award was contested between Belkin, Genius, Logitech, Microsoft and Trust. Microsoft picked up the coveted prize, securing 33% of the votes cast and seeing off the challenge of last year’s winner Logitech.

Microsoft also emerged victorious in the 2010 EMEA Software Vendor of the Year award category with 41% of the votes cast by distributors. The successful channel launch of Windows 7 was undoubtedly a major factor in Microsoft’s success in this category. The other nominees for this award were Adobe, Kaspersky, McAfee and Symantec. The previous winner of this award was Kaspersky. Dana Manciagli, general manager for the OEM division at Microsoft worldwide, picked up the vendor’s awards.

Asus, Gigabyte, Intel, Kingston and Western Digital went head-to-head for the 2010 EMEA Components Vendor of the Year award. Both Western Digital and Gigabyte were new nominees for this category in 2010, replacing AMD and Seagate who were in the top five last year. Western Digital was crowned 2010 EMEA Components Vendor of the Year with 33% of the vote.

The Digital Lifestyle Vendor of the Year award was once again won by Apple with an impressive 56% of the vote, highlighting continued support for the vendor from the EMEA distribution channel. Apple has made this category its own and has now won the award two years in a row. The other four successful nominees for the 2010 award were Canon, Samsung, Sony and TomTom. While four of the nominees were the same as 2009, a special word of praise must go to TomTom, which took the place of Logitech in 2010 in this category.

The 2010 EMEA Peripherals Vendor of the Year award was dominated by monitor vendors with Acer, HP and Samsung all nominated alongside networking players Cisco and D-Link. Samsung walked off with the prize after securing 29% of the vote.

In the 2010 EMEA Printing Vendor of the Year award there was one change in the list of nominees from 2009, with Xerox taking the place of Lexmark to line up alongside Canon, Epson, HP and Samsung in the running for the award. HP picked up the award for the second year in succession, picking up 32% of the votes cast.

The final vendor award of the evening was the 2010 EMEA Vendor Channel Initiative award. Based on written submissions by vendors, four entries made it through to the live vote. The winner of this coveted award was Promate for its Profit-Mate system designed to reward the efforts of sales teams within the channel.

Acer was also nominated for its TravelMate TimeLine marketing and launch programme in the third quarter of 2009. McAfee was nominated for its channel-focused EMEA rewards programme, while Sitecom also received an official nomination for its channel positioning and marketing message relating to its Smart Living product portfolio.

Prior to the live voting session during the ’ECA: 2010 Awards’ Gala Dinner, thousands of distributors from across the region were asked to pick their five preferred candidates for each award. All of this information was collected and counted to determine the final five nominees for each award. These five nominees went through to the live voting session during the Gala Dinner.

“Receiving an official nomination for the vendor awards is an achievement in itself,” added Hemraj. “The ECA Awards are built on a fair, open and transparent voting system designed to reflect real achievements in the EMEA channel.”

Vendors are assessed on a number of criteria including partner engagement, channel strategy, pricing, stock management, product evolution, margin potential, channel management and overall partner programmes. The EMEA Vendor Channel Initiative Award was based on written submissions with the five strongest entries receiving official nominations and facing the live vote.

Planning for the ’EMEA Channel Academy: 2011 Awards’ is already underway. For a full list of sponsorship options available at next year’s awards, please contact fhemraj@distree.com
