The EMEA Channel Wrap – 05/03/10

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 5 March 2010

Due to popular demand, the EMEA Channel Wrap is back from its winter break. We’ve been missing in action for the last month or so due to trips and events (including the top notch DISTREE XXL 2010 event in Monaco). As we’re all well aware, the EMEA channel never sleeps so we’ve dug out the foreign dictionaries once again to bring you a rundown of the news making headlines in national channel publications across EMEA. And we’re off…

Russia & CIS

1. CRN Russia reports that Landata has been recognised by IBM and awarded platinum distributor status by Big Blue for Russia. Landata was praised for its professional management, ability to support complex projects and its channel development expertise.

2. In the retail channel, CRN Russia claims that more ownership changes are afoot at consumer electronics retailer Eldorado, which PPF Group bought into in 2009. CRN Russia reckons that founder Igor Yakovlev plans to offload his remaining stake in Eldorado but wants to maintain control of the retailer’s operations in the Ukraine and its joint venture in Kazakhstan.

3. Russian retail hypermarket chain M.Video has opened a new Apple store in the Metropolis shopping centre in Moscow, according to CRN Russia. Asus has also continued expansion of its own brand retail stores with a new Asus4You store in Moscow taking its national network to five outlets in total.

4. The number crunchers at ITResearch in Russia have reported that monitor sales in the country hit 400,000 units in January 2010 – down 7% year-on-year. Despite the decline, the researchers were quick to point to a number of factors including seasonality and the impact of sales duty changes on the monitor market.

Before we leave Russia, it is also worth noting that the dates for DISTREE IT Channel Week 2010 for the Russia & CIS region have now been confirmed. Taking place from the 23rd to 25th June in Moscow, this ‘must attend’ event gathers together hundreds of senior vendor, distributor and channel executives for three days of intense business development activities. Save the date and visit the event website here to find out more.

Middle East

5. From Russia, we head to warmer climes in Arabia where Channel Middle East reports on Bashar Bashaireh returning to Fortinet to take on the role of regional director. Bashaireh had previously left the UTM vendor in September 2008 to join the Ministry of ICT in Jordan. Bashaireh is chuffed to be back at Fortinet and reckons that growth prospects remain strong.

6. Heading to Saudi Arabia and Channel Middle East also wades through retail giant Jarir Bookstores’ annual accounts. Jarir’s sales climbed just 1.5% year-on-year in 2009 to hit US$671m with profits up 3% to US$99m. The decline in Jarir’s sales growth, which had hit 45% and 16% in the two previous years, highlights the changing market conditions in the Kingdom’s retail channel.

The region’s retail channel community will once again gather for Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) in the UAE from May 18th to 21st 2010. Now in its sixth year, DCC MEA has firmly established itself as the ‘must attend’ event for retail executives and vendors spearheading channel development in the region. Southern Africa

7. Off to Africa next where ITWeb reports on Bytes Technology Group’s CEO David Redshaw announcing his decision to retire. He will be replaced by Xerox distributor Bytes Document Solutions’ managing director Rob Abraham. Redshaw will take up the role of chairman at Bytes’ UK operations.

8. CRN South Africa reports on a distribution deal struck between data management solutions outfit CommVault and Ingram Micro South Africa. Ingram Micro becomes CommVault’s second distributor in the local market. CommVault also sells through Workgroup according to the vendor’s partner locator tool.

Southern Europe

9. Heading into Italy next and Channel City carries details of a new distribution deal between local channel behemoth Esprinet and hard drive player Seagate. Esprinet will focus on retail distribution for Seagate and will also stock a range of hard drives and NAS products targeted at the SMB segment.

10. Channel City also reports on Michele Gasparoli’s appointment as marketing director at VAD outfit Computerlinks in Italy. Gasparoli reckons that his main challenge now will be to improve the marketing focus and work together with resellers to improve and strengthen their own go-to-market approaches.

Western Europe

11. We’re zooming up to the UK next where Microscope reports on the departure of director Andy Dow from distributor Westcoast by ‘mutual agreement’. Dow worked for Westcoast for seven year until 2007 and then he moved to head up Dell’s UK channel before returning to Westcoast in early 2009. Now he’s off again to pastures new.

12. Staying in the UK and it’s Hammer time at CRN with a report on the storage distributor’s bumper sales in January 2010. Hammer’s sales were up 34% year-on-year with managing director James Ward attributing the success to partnerships with Intel and Microsoft and the company’s build-to-order expertise.

13. Flying over La Manche and landing in the Eurozone, we’re in France next up with ChannelInsider, which reports on the appointment of Frederic Braut as Websense’s new director of operations in the country. Braut brings a wealth of channel experience to his new role including stints at Novell, McAfee, Nortel, Oracle, Sun and IBM.

14. The Benelux is our penultimate stop this week at ChannelWorld with the news that distributor ETC has officially opened a branch in Belgium. The official opening was celebrated at a reception attended by both partners and customers of ETC.

Central & Eastern Europe

15. We finish this week’s round up in Central & Eastern Europe with ChannelWorld in the Czech Republic. According to ChannelWorld, BenQ has strengthened its team in the region on the back of strong results in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Vladimir Dzuričeka has joined as product manager for Slovakia.

That’s all folks - have a great weekend. Remember, if you’ve got some channel news or announcements (or even some juicy gossip), please send it to news@channelemea.com
