Al-Futtaim CEO to speak at DCC MEA

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 10 May 2010

Robert (Bob) A. Willett, the recently appointed group CEO at Al-Futtaim, will deliver the opening keynote speech at this year’s Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) event. Willett previously served as CEO of Best Buy International – a strategic business unit of US consumer electronics and IT retail giant Best Buy. He was also Chairman of Best Buy Europe – the unit that formed a joint venture with Carphone Warehouse – until his retirement from the role in January 2010.

“We are delighted to welcome Bob to DCC MEA 2010 as our opening keynote speaker,” said Farouk Hemraj, CEO at DISTREE Events, the organiser of DCC MEA. “His wealth of retail experience and his new Middle East-based role at Al-Futtaim made him the perfect choice of keynote speaker for DCC MEA. We feel sure that delegates will learn a great deal from his speech and we want to thank him for taking the time out of his busy schedule to join us at the region’s premier retail channel event.”

Willett’s keynote speech, entitled ‘The Battle Ground’, takes place on Tuesday 18th May from 17:50-18:30 at Le Meridian Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah, UAE – the venue for this year’s DCC MEA event. More than 160 retail executives, 60-plus vendors and the region’s leading retail distributors will attend this year’s sold out event.

Willett first joined Al-Futtaim’s Board of Directors in August 2009 taking on the group CEO role after leaving Best Buy at the end of the year. He has brought considerable strategic experience to the UAE- headquartered group and has already begun consolidating business interests and core competencies to ensure the company becomes truly customer centric. Al-Futtaim’s operations include IT and consumer electronics distribution plus UAE retail chain Plug-Ins.

In his former role as CEO of Best Buy International, the strategic business unit of Best Buy, Willett focused on creating opportunities for growth and innovation outside of North America. He was appointed to this role in the spring of 2005. Under Willett’s leadership, Best Buy International implemented a global ‘multi channel’ growth strategy to maximise the retailer’s opportunities beyond North America, entering China, Mexico, Turkey and nine countries in Europe, in addition to Canada.

Willett also led the deal with Carphone Warehouse in Europe to build out the capabilities of Best Buy, enabling it to accelerate its progress to the ‘Connected World’. In addition Willett continued to re-engineer the supply chain and IT functions that supported the company’s customer centric ‘multi-channel’ transformation. Willett’s experience spans a variety of positions in the retail industry over the past several decades including a distinguished career with Accenture and posts at UK retailer Marks & Spencer.

DCC MEA 2010

This year’s Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) event takes place from May 18-20th. DCC is the ultimate professional networking event for senior executives from the consumer electronics, digital device and ICT products retail channel in the MEA region. DCC MEA is a focused event for retail executives based on the successful concept of bringing high-level buyers from emerging markets into productive contact with vendors.

DCC MEA regularly attracts more than 160 senior executives from MEA’s consumer electronics, digital device and ICT products retail channel. These include the powerful buyers and decision makers responsible for product selection for the retailers they represent. Not only is DCC MEA a powerful business platform, it is also an annual networking function allowing vendors to meet face-to-face with both existing and potential new retail partners from across the region.

For retail executives, attending DCC MEA is time well spent. In just three days you can hold dozens of face-to-face meetings with existing and potential new vendors, meet with your peers from across the region, find out more about the latest industry trends and market data. All this at one and much more at one exclusive event: DCC MEA, the ‘must-attend’ event for vendors and retailers associated with MEA’s consumer electronics, digital device and ICT products channel.
