‘MERA: 2010 Awards’ – RETAILERS

With less than a week until the ‘Middle East Retail Academy (MERA): 2010 Awards’, the official list of nominated retailers and distributors has been released. A total of eight retailer awards and two distributor awards will be handed out at the ‘MERA: 2010 Awards’ Gala Dinner, which takes place on May 19th in Fujairah, UAE, in conjunction with Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) – the region’s premier event for the IT and consumer electronics retail channel.

Now in its third year, the MERA Awards are established as the premier independent awards for the Middle East IT and consumer electronics retail channel. Members of a VIP vendor jury and MERA members working at a vendor level nominated their preferred retailer in a number of categories based on geography and store type. Retailers receiving the most votes make the nominations shortlist with the eventual winners decided by live electronic voting by vendor executives during the Gala Dinner.

The five confirmed nominees for each retailer award that will be decided by live voting are:

Hypermarket / Big Box Retailer of the Year – UAE: Carrefour, Emax, Lulu, Plug-Ins, Sharaf DG

Mall-based / Specialist Retailer of the Year – UAE: CompuMe, Dubai Duty Free, Jacky’s, Jumbo, Virgin

Hypermarket / Big Box Retailer of the Year – Saudi Arabia: Carrefour, Emax, Extra, Jarir, Panda

Mall-based / Specialist Retailer of the Year – Saudi Arabia: Ahmed Abdul Wahed, Best E-City, Electro, Lingo, Obeikan

Retailer of the Year – Rest of Gulf: Alghanim (X-cite), Carrefour Qatar, Emax Oman, Geant Bahrain, Sharaf DG Bahrain

Retailer of the Year – Egypt: Carrefour, CompuMe, Hyper One, RadioShack, Virgin

Retailer of the Year – Levant: Abed Tahan & Sons, Carrefour Jordan, Khoury Home Lebanon, Smart Buy Jordan, Virgin Lebanon

There is also a Retailer Marketing Initiative of the Year Award up for grabs. Retailers were invited to submit application packs for this award, which were then whittled down to five finalists by the MERA Executive Committee. The five nominated retailers will also face a live electronic vote to decide the winning entry. The five nominated retailers for this award are: Alghanim (X-cite), Carrefour UAE, Extra, Plug-Ins, Sharaf DG UAE.

“There is a wealth of retailing talent in the Middle East channel,” said Farouk Hemraj, one of the organisers of the ‘MERA: 2010 Awards’. “We congratulate all the retailers that have secured official nominations and they should realise that reaching this stage is an achievement in itself. We look forward to welcoming representatives from the nominated companies to the Gala Dinner.”

Two distributor awards will also be handed out at the awards with retailers this time in charge of the electronic voting devices as they select their preferred supplier for both volume and value-based retail distribution. The five nominees in each category were once again selected based on the strength of detailed application packs submitted to the MERA Executive Committee. The nominated distributors are:

Volume Retail Distributor of the Year: ABM (Olayan), Al-Futtaim Electronics, Asbis, FDC, Redington

Specialist Retail Distributor of the Year: Ashley, Emitac, GCT, Grand Stores, ITE

DCC MEA 2010
