‘ECA: 2011 Awards’ – DISTRIBUTOR WINNERS

by Stuart Wilson, Tuesday 15 February 2011

The ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2011 Awards’ took place in Monaco last week in association with DISTREE XXL – the region’s premier channel event. Vendor executives with EMEA channel responsibility voted live for nine regional distributor categories. Ingram Micro picked up three awards for with ABC Data, Actebis, Arena, Asbis, Elko and Mustek winning one apiece.

“We want to congratulate all of this year’s distributor winners,” said Farouk Hemraj, CEO at DISTREE Events, the organisers of the awards. “Making it to the final five nominees is an achievement in itself, based on a poll of hundreds of vendors in the run-up to the ceremony. All distributors that were nominated should be pleased with their achievement.”

“These awards also showcased the continued diversity that exists in the EMEA distribution channel,” added Hemraj. “The relationship between vendors and distributors is more important than ever as channel models evolve and the services offered expand and deepen.”

The full rundown

The first award of the evening was ‘Africa Distributor of the Year’ with Mustek, Pinnacle Africa, Rectron, Tarsus and Red Dot going head-to-head in the live vote. The award went to Mustek with 35% of the vote. Mustek became the third winner of this award following on from successes for Westcon in 2009 and Ingram Micro South Africa in 2010.

The ‘Middle East & North Africa Distributor of the Year’ award has been a closely fought category in recent years. In 2010, the live vote resulted in a tie between Redington and Aptec, who also won the award in 2009. Both Aptec and Redington received official nominations in 2011 alongside Almasa, Asbis and FDC. This year’s winner was Asbis picking up an impressive 41% of the vote.

AB, ABC Data, Action, Asbis and Tech Data all received official nominations for the ‘Central & Eastern Europe Distributor of the Year’ award. ABC Data picked up the award for the third year in succession, underlining its strength in the region.

Three-in-a-row for Elko

The ‘Russia & CIS Distributor of the Year’ award was contested between Asbis, Elko, Inline, Merlion and OCS. Elko made it a hat trick of titles, picking up the 2011 award to add to its success in this category in both 2010 and 2009.

The official nominations for the ‘South East Europe Distributor of the Year’ award were Arena, Asbis, EWE Comp, M SAN Group and Oktabit. Arena won a close fought live vote, narrowly edging out Asbis to win the award for the second year in succession.

The ‘Southern Europe Distributor of the Year’ award saw Esprinet going for three-in-a-row after picking up the award in 2009 and 2010. Computer Gross, Databox Informatica, Esprinet, Ingram Micro and Tech Data were the five nominated companies for this award. In a close vote, Ingram Micro picked up 42% - edging out Esprinet with 38% - to claim the title and its first award of the evening.

The ‘Northern Europe Distributor of the Year’ saw Actebis, Also, Avnet, Ingram Micro and Tech Data line up in the final five. Because the awards are based on performance during the previous year, Actebis and Also were treated as separate entities despite the recent merger of the two businesses. This award was won by GNT, which was part of Also, in both 2009 and 2010. The 2011 accolade went to Actebis with 37% of the vote.

The ‘Dach Distributor of the Year’ award saw Actebis, Also, Ingram Micro, Tech Data and Wortmann go head-to-head in the final five. This award had been won by Actebis in both 2009 and 2010 but Ingram Micro picked up the 2011 award with an impressive 48% of the vendor vote.

The final award for ‘UK & Ireland Distributor of the Year’ saw Computer 2000, EntaTech, Ingram Micro, Micro-P and VIP Computer Centre all receive official nominations. Westcoast, which won the category in both 2009 and 2010, was not nominated this year. Ingram Micro picked up the coveted prize, claiming its third distributor award of the evening.
