Middle East trade show GITEX 2016 is taking place from October 16-20th in Dubai. We’re going to keep you updated with news both before and during the event, with a special emphasis on all channel and related technology announcements. Keep checking back to our snapshot guide to stay up to speed on all things GITEX. Some companies have got real news to share, some less so...

1. TP-Link turns 20

29/9/16 - Networking vendor TP-Link will use its GITEX participation to celebrate its 20th anniversary. So, expect to see a cake on the stand at some point during this year’s event. Away from the celebrations, newly rebranded TP-Link wants channel partners to start seeing the vendor as a smart home brand, not just a networking vendor.

Denny Liang, VP, TP-Link Middle East, explained: "We are embarking on a new journey and chapter to meet the needs of today’s connected consumer lifestyles. The updated logo, with fresh colour schemes, the broad curve and the arrow point represent the user interacting with TP-Link."

2. Brocade gets bigger

29/9/16 - That’s right, networking solutions vendor Brocade is bigger. More people and more partners in the Middle East. Brocade has added an extra 25 partners in the region (timescale unclear) and there have been three people added to the channel team.

Yarob Sakhnini, MEMA sales director at Brocade, said: “The Middle East is a very important region for Brocade, the continued growth of our team on the ground is testament to this. With ever expanding opportunities, we remain committed to growing our footprint in the region and working with partners to ensure that organisations across the Middle East have access to world-class networking technology.”

3. Arrow to showacse HCI

5/10/16 Distributor Arrow Electronics will showcase a range of next-generation hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), flash storage, software-defined infrastructure, and advanced security solutions from leading technology vendors at GITEX.

Research indicates that the HCI market is emerging as one of the fastest growing and most valuable technology segments in the industry. Research house IDC expects new data centre investments will leverage converged or hyper-converged infrastructures to support both public and private cloud deployments across the Middle East and Africa market, with a forecast growth rate of 12% in 2016.

“We continue to see the HCI approach garnering attention of IT leaders and business stakeholders as they strive to transform data centre infrastructure into a more agile, scalable, and predictable platform, while operating under budget and resource constraints to meet ever-changing business requirements,” said Vimal Kocher, managing director for the Middle East region of Arrow’s enterprise computing solutions business.

“In addition to the assessment study, we will also be hosting a series of technical workshops, lunch-and-learns, and cost-and-benefit analysis sessions at the in-house lab and proof-of-concept solution centre at the Arrow Dubai office in the coming months. We aim to provide consultative advices and practical solutions to help customers and partners realise transformative benefits delivered by HCI in addressing many IT challenges,” Kocher added.

4. Sophos sorts out ransomware

10/10/16 Sophos will focus on its ‘synchronised security’ strategy, showcasing its extensive portfolio of next-gen endpoint, network and encryption security solutions at the region’s premier ICT event.

“With the increase in sophisticated attacks across the region, companies are looking for smarter and simpler IT security solutions... We’re excited to be able to share our recently announced Sophos Intercept X,a next-generation endpoint security product that stops zero-day malware, unknown exploit variants and stealth attacks, and includes an advanced anti-ransomware feature that can detect previously unknown ransomware within seconds,” said Harish Chib, VP MEA at Sophos.

5. AOC over the road

10/10/16 Displays vendor AOC has unsurprisingly announced that it will showcase displays during GITEX week. Cheekily, AOC’s press release announces that it will be showcasing its kit ’in conjunction’ with GITEX over the road from Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) at the Fairmont Hotel (we assume they are referring to the Fairmont on Sheikh Zayed Road).

“AOC is innovating state of art technology combined with market intelligence and understanding that enables us to design our display solutions with user comfort in mind,” said Vineeth Sebastian, regional sales director for MEA, AOC. “Demonstrating our display solutions during GITEX Technology Week is part of our efforts to promote innovation in the region and support our channel partners across Middle East Africa.”

6. Gigamon takes on cybercriminals

11/10/16 Traffic visibility solutions specialist Gigamon will put the spotlight on its Visibility Fabric and the industry’s first security delivery platform – GigaSECURE - at GITEX. Senior executives and experts will meet with customers and partners.

“Today, organisations around the world are fighting a growing enemy – and losing. Cybercriminals have breached almost every major corporation and government department and it’s time to turn the tables on cybercrime. With data dispersed across the infrastructure, IT organisations struggle to manage, analyse, and secure their networks. A Visibility Fabric can provide pervasive visibility across the network,” said Trevor Dearing, EMEA marketing director at Gigamon.

7. Acronis protects hybrid cloud data

11/10/16 Acronis, a provider of hybrid cloud data protection, will focus on Acronis Backup 12 at GITEX. Acronis Backup 12 can achieve RTOs (recovery time objectives) of 15-seconds or less, and offers protection on 15 platforms, which makes it a solution unlike any other for today’s hybrid cloud IT environments.

“Our participation this year will help us bring the power of the Acronis Backup 12 direct to customers and partners,” said Guurprit Ahuja, director Middle East and Africa, Acronis. “Backup and recovery is often an afterthought, and legacy backup systems fail to provide adequate protection due to today’s increasingly complex IT infrastructure. Our aim is to educate end-users and partners on why efficient backup and recovery solutions are an important component of IT investments with businesses of all sizes.”

8. Fortinet touts Security Fabric

11/10/16 Cyber security solutions outfit Fortinet will demonstrate how enterprises can protect themselves from sophisticated cybersecurity threats with its Security Fabric at GITEX. Fortinet Security Fabric is an integrated, collaborative, and adaptive architecture that is designed to deliver distributed security for global enterprises, providing comprehensive protection against threats from IoT and remote devices, through the infrastructure core, and into the cloud.

“The security landscape in the region is evolving at a rapid pace - universal digitisation continues to redefine business, with technology trends like IoT and cloud computing blurring the edges of the network,” says Alain Penel, regional VP Middle East, Fortinet. “Relying on antiquated security strategies that were developed in years long past will no longer support the ever-increasing speed of business."

9. HID Global simplifies security

11/10/16 Secure identity solutions outfit HID Global will demonstrate its ActivID Tap Authentication platform, which is powered by Seos, for secure multi-factor authentication to more than 2,400 cloud apps and web services on mobile devices with the tap of a smart card.

"HID Global is transforming the way users think about security removing the notion that it is complex, expensive and compromises convenience. Thanks to our experience and innovations in secure identity and access management solutions HID Global eliminates this complexity and give users the means to seamlessly connect with strong two-factor authentication, use more applications on the go, login with a ’tap’ on mobile devices and the cloud, and all with a single trusted ID that can be carried on their personal device or smart card, said Miguel Braojos, VP global sales IAM solutions at HID Global.
