by Stuart Wilson, Monday 3 October 2011

Trade show GITEX 2011 is taking place from October 9-13th in Dubai. We’re going to keep you updated with news both before and during the event, with a special emphasis on channel announcements. Here’s our snapshot guide to the pre-event announcements.

Sophos sets out security agenda

3/10/11 IT security and data protection company, Sophos, incorporating unified threat management (UTM) solution provider Astaro, will demonstrate its threat and data protection offerings at GITEX.

“The Middle East is still a maturing market where businesses are investing heavily in innovative and advanced technologies,” said Kamel Heus (1), Sophos’ regional manager in the Middle East. “Larger budgets are being allocated towards implementing superior IT solutions with a heavy emphasis on security.

Heus added: “Channel partners have been a guiding force for the growth of Sophos in the region…Updating existing partners and customers with the latest products and reaching out to new partners and customers is high on our agenda.”

Iomega eyes storage growth

3/10/11 Storage solutions vendor Iomega will target Apple users at GITEX with portable hard drives for Mac products, including the companion drive with charging and port capabilities as well as the Helium option – a resilient and secure way to store, share and back-up Mac files.

For the region’s business users, Iomega will showcase the new Iomega StorCenter PX Series of network storage products, created to meet the needs of smaller and medium-sized businesses, including the Iomega StorCenter™ px12-350r network storage array.

“Iomega is offering small businesses and consumers a great value for cloud access and protection, with its Personal Cloud technology, that is completely self-owned,” said Cizar Abughazaleh (2), general manager for Iomega in the Middle East and Asia.

Jacky’s pushes ultrabooks

3/10/11 UAE retailer Jacky’s reckons that ultrabooks (thinner and slimmer notebooks) will be big sellers at GITEX Shopper, the consumer-focused part of the event. Jacky’s will have a range of models from brands including Acer and Lenovo on sale.

“The ultrabook is an ultra-slim laptop running on the latest generation Intel processor that maxes out at 0.8 inches thick. With ultrabooks available at GITEX Shopper, major brands have a product that will rival Apple’s MacBook Air,” said Ashish Panjabi (3), COO at Jacky’s Electronics.

CE ANALYSIS: While ultrabooks will undoubtedly attract some interest at GITEX Shoppers, we still reckon that tablets and smartphones will be the killer categories capturing the most attention.

Aptec pushes VAD credentials

3/10/11 Regional distributor Aptec plans to focus on business solutions and showcase its VAD credentials at this year’s show. This will be Aptec’s 31st appearance at GITEX.

"GITEX gives potential vendor partners the chance to meet our teams from our other offices in the region. This helps them to understand new markets and discuss opportunities in those markets," said Dr. Ali Baghdadi (4), CEO and president at Aptec.

Fujitsu’s big picture opportunity

5/10/11 Fujitsu will run a promotion at Gitex Shopper involving a Japanese sumo wrestler to draw attention to its German-made Lifebook laptops. Buy a Fujitsu notebook and you get a free professional picture taken with Nara (8), a 165kg sumo wrestler. Consumers also get the chance to arm wrestle with Nara or enjoy a ‘friendly’ tug-of-war with cashback vouchers, discounts, free cameras, hard drives and even free laptops up for grabs.

Chandan Mehta, director of product and portfolio management at Fujitsu Technology Solutions, said: “While Fujitsu’s Lifebook notebook computers are lightweight, they carry the power of the second generation Intel Core processing, packing major computing strength in a small and sleek package.”
