VIP Group buys CMS Computers

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 7 November 2011

Distributor VIP Group has acquired UK-based assembler CMS Computers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Liverpool-based CMS Computers owns the Zoostorm and Fizzbook brands and supplies PC to the IT trade, resellers and retailers. VIP reckons that the deal will push its annual turnover in excess of US$320m per annum. CMS Computers employs approximately 70 staff and posted sales of US$48m in calendar 2010.

Jatti Sahni, chairman of VIP Computer Centre, commented: “CMS are the UK’s third largest independent PC builder in the UK and will grow further by maintaining their commitment to their business model with the added strength and support of VIP Group.”

Sahni added: “I am keen to leverage the strength of VIP Group to significantly acquire scale through a blend of organic growth and further strategic acquisitions within our chosen sectors."

VIP is a trade only distributor of PCs and PC components and claims to have the UK’s largest market share in distribution of computer components. VIP claims that the CMS Computers acquisition creates growth opportunities for both companies.

CMS Computers will be run independently by two of their current directors under the VIP Group. The two directors, Sion Roberts and Ian Fraser, reckoned that the deal was an opportunity for CMS to further enhance the Zoostorm brand and increase market share. CMS will maintain its own identity and continue to trade as CMS Computers Limited.

8/11/11 UPDATE: Dave Stevinson, sales director at distributor VIP, has confirmed to www.channelemea.com that VIP Group now owns 100% of CMS Computers but would not disclose the precise structure of the deal.

“It is important to understand that VIP Group is a collection of companies. It is necessary to differentiate the VIP Group from VIP Computer Centre – the distribution business,” said Stevinson.

“VIP Group can gain from this deal and grow from it. We can gain scale,” he added.

CMS Computers was a customer of VIP Computer Centre prior to the deal.

Stevinson added: “This was not a distress sale.”
