Reliance Digital plans massive expansion

Indian retailer Reliance Digital plans to embark on a massive expansion plan, taking its number of outlets from just over 100 now to 500 by March 2014. To meet this aggressive target Reliance Digital will need to open a new store every single day somewhere in India. Reliance Digital will focus on retail formats designed for tier two and tier three cities in India.

Vijay Nair, assistant VP of Reliance Retail, also revealed that Reliance Digital is considering expanding its network of warehouses in India to have one in each state. Reliance Digital currently operates approximately 20 warehouses.

Reliance Digital wants to tap into growing demand for ICT and consumer electronics (CE) products in India. The retailer reckons that it could even grow its revenues to six times their current level during the next four years. This rate of growth would take Reliance Digital’s revenues up to approximately US$9 billion.

The retailer has also been venturing into online sales and aggressively pushing into new product segments such as tablets. Nair reckons that new Reliance Digital stores can start contributing real profits within a year of opening. The retailer operates a number of different store formats ranging from smaller Istores spanning 1500 square feet through to larger format stores covering more than 8000 square feet.

Reliance Digital will open two new stores in the next few days in Allahabad and Gulbarga. The Allahabad store will cover 8600 square feet and occupy the second floor of a building on one of the city’s major streets. The Reliance Digital store in Gulbarga will be located in the Asian Mall and cover 8500 square feet. Reliance Digital stocks products from more than 200 international and national brands and offers consumers a choice of more than 4000 SKUs.
