LG plans retail expansion in emerging markets

Electronics and IT vendor LG has revealed plans to expand the number of retail stores it operates in emerging markets around the world. LG, which currently has 3000 stores, could open a further 600 this year in India, the Middle East and Africa, according to recent comments from executive VP Kim Ki-wan. LG stores would display a range of products including smartphones, TVs and home appliances.

LG hopes to revive its fortunes in the competitive smartphone space with its latest Optimus products. LG currently ranks fifth in the vendor rankings for smartphone manufacturers. The expansion of its retail presence will go hand-in-hand with renewed marketing efforts from LG.

LG believes that smartphones now play a critical role in defining overall brand equity in the consumer market. The company believes that enhanced consumer perception of its smartphone products could also benefit the company’s reputation in other product categories such as TVs.
