Computer 2000 opens whizzy Windows 8 website
Computer 2000, the UK arm of distribution giant Tech Data, has unveiled a dedicated Windows 8 website aimed at helping resellers and retailers get up to speed on Microsoft’s new touch-enabled operating system and start driving opportunities with consumers, education and business. Computer 2000 is expecting a surge in sales of Windows 8-based tablets and also says that sales of all-in-one (AIO) PCs could be boosted by the new operating system.

Software giant Microsoft has inked a new strategic global partnership with unified communications (UC) VAD Westcon Convergence. Microsoft believes the collaboration with Westcon Convergence will help enable and drive Microsoft channel partners to deliver Microsoft Lync UC solutions to market.

Asbis posts third quarter figures
Emerging markets distributor Asbis has posted sales of US$433.5m for the third quarter of 2012 – up 20.6% year-on-year. After tax profits for the third quarter quadrupled year-on-year to US$2m. The third quarter figures pushed Asbis’ sales for the first nine months of 2012 up 16.5% year-on-year to US$1.18 billion. After tax profits for the first nine months totalled US$4.6m, rebounding from a loss of US$2.6m in the same period a year earlier.

AOC turns to FireBird for Central Asia TV move
Displays vendor AOC, part of Taiwan-based TPV Technology, has announced its entry into the TV space in Central Asia and the Transcaucasia region. AOC has appointed Dubai-based FireBird as a distribution partner for its LCD and LED TVs in both regions. The two companies have worked together on the distribution of PC monitors for several years.

Channel research house CONTEXT reckons that software sales through Europe’s main distribution channels have defied the region’s economic downturn. CONTEXT claims that third quarter 2012 revenues for software sold through distribution were up 4.7% year-on-year.

Computer 2000 plans Zyxel training in Dublin
Computer 2000, the UK and Ireland arm of distribution giant Tech Data, has scheduled two days of free Zyxel training at its offices in Dublin later this month. Computer 2000 hopes that the sessions will enable Irish resellers to get up to speed on Zyxel’s range of managed and smart switches.

Widget goes Dutch with Now Mobile
UK-based distributor Widget has acquired a majority stake in Netherlands-based Now Mobile for an undisclosed fee. Widget hopes that the deal will give it a platform to push its current portfolio of products into the Benelux channel. Widget’s vendor portfolio includes Orbitsound, Fitbit and Sphero. Bart Hoorntje, a Dutch national, will initially take on the management of Now Mobile in addition to his current UK responsibilities at Widget.

Channel giant Tech Data has completed its purchase of SDG’s distribution businesses in the UK, France and Netherlands. SDG was the distribution arm of privately-held UK IT services giant SCH. Tech Data reckons that the deal strengthens its position in Europe’s enterprise and broadline distribution markets. The agreement for this acquisition was first announced on September 5th 2012.

Distributor Elko Group has started delivering Wexler electronic books and tablet PCs to its channel customer base. Elko signed a Russian distribution deal with Wexler, one of the largest stores of electronic content and the first electronic publishing house in the Russian Federation. Wexler has worked closely with various vendors including Intel, Microsoft, LG, Nvidia, AMD, Foxconn and others to develop its products, which are all certified according to international standards.
