Middle East retail channel split on 2010 outlook

The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for December 2009 showed a slight improvement in channel conditions. The overall MERA Confidence Index climbed modestly to 6.21 (scored out of 10). There is a disparity growing between vendors and retailers. While the Confidence Index for vendors climbed to 6.8 from 6.15 a month earlier, the Confidence Index for retailers slipped to 5.54 – down from 6.1. Read full story

Avaya prepares for emerging markets channel event

Avaya will hold its emerging markets channel partner conference in Dubai on February 2nd and 3rd 2010. The event will bring together more than 300 channel partners. Having successfully completed its acquisition of Nortel’s enterprise solutions business, Avaya will also invite Nortel’s partners to the channel event. Read full story

The EMEA Channel Academy (ECA) has announced the distributors nominated for awards in 2010. Hundreds of senior vendor executives from across EMEA have provided details of their preferred distributors by region. The top five distributors in each distributor award category will now go forwards to face a live electronic vote at the ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2010 Awards’ Gala Dinner, which takes place in Monaco on February 10th in conjunction with DISTREE XXL. HP opens Jordan subsidiary

IT colossus HP has boosted its Middle East presence, opening a fully-owned subsidiary in Jordan. The new HP Jordan will offer sales, service and support capabilities to the local market. HP has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Jordan relating to future job creation. Read full story

HP confirms Ziade switch to PSG

Hardware giant HP has confirmed the appointment of Salim Ziade as general manager for its PSG unit in the Middle East. Ziade replaces Anil Kumar who leaves HP after two years in the PSG hot seat. Ziade switches to PSG from his previous role as channel sales director for consumer and commercial products for HP Middle East. Read full story

Belkin extends coverage with Almasa deal

Belkin has boosted its channel coverage in the Middle East, appointing Almasa IT Distribution as a partner for its complete range of products in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Almasa will attempt to further develop Belkin’s business in these markets and increase brand awareness. The two companies plan to focus heavily on the Saudi market to meet increasing consumer demand for Belkin’s connectivity solutions and accessories. Read full story

Aptec announces ProCurve training in Dubai

Middle East distribution powerhouse Aptec will host a one-day HP ProCurve training session in Dubai on January 20th for partners and resellers. The event will focus on training delegates up to accredited sales professional (ASP) status on ProCurve products. The ASP designation certifies that an individual is knowledgeable of networking concepts and can describe the features, functions and positioning of the products in the HP ProCurve networking portfolio. Toshiba bullish on Middle East PC market

Toshiba is confident that the Middle East PC market will thrive in 2010. "Several market indicators signal that the notebook business will see stronger growth this year,” said Santosh Varghese, regional general manager at Toshiba. “Having seen a marginal increase in sales from the previous period, the Middle East PC industry is expected to grow over 25% across the region for this year." Retail confidence dips in Middle East as 2009 ends

Retail confidence in the Middle East IT and consumer electronics channel dipped sharply towards the end of calendar 2009. The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for working month November 2009 showed the overall retail confidence index falling to 6.13. Drilling deeper into the results, the decline was triggered by a sharp decline in vendor scores, indicating a more pessimistic outlook on the market prospects for the first quarter of 2010.
