Redington strikes Arena deal in Turkey

Distribution outfit Redington has splashed the cash for a minority stake in Istanbul-quoted Turkish giant Arena. Bombay-quoted Redington Indian announced that its overseas subsidiary, Redington International Holdings, had signed a deal to acquire a 49.4% stake in Arena for US$42.5m. Arena’s annual sales for its last fiscal year hit US$451m. Read full story

‘Perfect storm’ for Middle East retail channel

The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for August 2010 highlighted the tough trading conditions that faced the IT and CE retail channel last month. A combination of the traditional summer slowdown, the timing of Ramadan and consumers leaving the region on holiday created the ‘perfect storm’. The MMR Retailer Sales Index slumped to an all time low of 4.58 (scored out of 10) but optimism of a fourth quarter recovery grew. Read full story

Samsung launches Egyptian service campaign

Samsung has whipped the covers off a new service campaign for its customers in Egypt. The vendor giant will have Korean engineers at select dealer locations from September 26th to October 2nd to support the servicing of various products including mobile phones, digital cameras and IT products. Emax changes store layout

Middle East IT and consumer electronics retailer Emax has unveiled a new layout at its Oasis Mall store in Dubai, UAE. Emax has positioned mobile phone, PCs and laptops on the ground floor of the new look store, explaining that these are best selling product categories for the retailer. Citing BMI research, Emax reckons that the Middle East electronics market will be worth US$3.9 billion per annum by 2014. Read full story

Golden Systems signs Cooler Master deal

Middle East distributor Golden Systems has struck a regional agreement with components vendor Cooler Master. The deal covers the UAE, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Cooler Master offers a range of products including computer chassis, power supplies and CPU coolers. Golden Systems will promote and distribute the vendor’s CM Storm and Choiix brands through its channel network. Read full story

Jacky’s launches phone recycling service

UAE retailer Jacky’s has beefed up its green credentials, launching a new service offering called ‘Eco-Exchange: Recycling That Pays’. The scheme is designed to assist with the proper disposal of electronic products in the UAE and will initially offer customers a cash voucher for old mobile phones that can then be used against future purchases. Microsoft adds Al-Futtaim for Xbox 360

Microsoft Gulf has appointed Al-Futtaim Electronics as an additional Xbox 360 hardware distributor for the Gulf region, excluding Saudi Arabia. Under the terms of the deal, Al-Futtaim Electronics will aim to make Xbox 360 gaming devices and accessories available to consumers across the GCC through an increased range of retail stores. AOC adds country manager in Saudi Arabia

Monitor vendor AOC has strengthened its Middle East team, appointing Afaq Ahmed as its new country sales manager for Saudi Arabia. AOC hopes to expand its operations across the Kingdom.
