Strong growth for Argentinean ICT & CE market

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Argentina indicates that the total market value for the second quarter of 2013 was US$2.25 billion – up 44.8% year-on-year. GfK’s research measures the size of what it terms the ‘technical consumer goods’ market, which includes the following product categories: consumer electronics; photo; major domestic appliances; small domestic appliances; IT; telecoms, office equipment and consumables. Microsoft bets US$7.2 billion on Nokia deal

Technology giant Microsoft has bet US$7.2 billion cash on a deal to purchase Nokia’s handset business. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014. Microsoft reckons that buying Nokia lock, stock and barrel will allow it to accelerate sales of mobile devices running Windows Phone through faster innovation, plus unified branding and marketing. Rapid growth predicted for smartwatch shipments

The numbercrunchers at Juniper Research reckon that global smartwatch shipments will hit 36 million units per annum by 2018 driven by new multifunction device capabilities. Juniper’s crystal ball sees rapid growth for the nascent product category in the years ahead. For 2013, smartwatch shipments are expected to reach 1 million units. Read full story

Storage Products Association (SPA) established

Storage giant WD has set up a new association to promote magnetic storage technologies. WD has teamed up with other hard drive companies to establish the Storage Products Association (SPA). The SPA, which also includes HGST, Seagate and Toshiba as members, plans to make consumers and professionals aware of how critical hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs) are to their digital lives. Red Hat names new global alliances VP

Open source solutions provider Red Hat has appointed Scott Musson as its new VP of global strategic alliances. Musson, previously at VMware, will be responsible for Red Hat’s global alliance, system integrator and ISV relationships, and will manage Red Hat’s strategic relationships with HP, IBM, Dell and Cisco. Ingram Micro rejigs global executive team

Distribution giant Ingram Micro has rejigged its global executive team, announcing a number of new appointments. Effective August 1st 2013, John Soumbasakis, 43, will be promoted to senior executive VP and president Asia Pacific, and Gerhard Schulz, 50, will be promoted to senior executive VP and president Europe. Mike Zilis, 43, will assume the role of executive VP and president, Latin America, effective January 4th 2014. As part of the shake-up there are also new roles for Shailendra Gupta, and Alain Maquet. Tech Data posts third quarter figures

Distribution giant Tech Data has posted third quarter sales of US$6.04 billion for the three months ending October 31st 2012, a year-on-year decline of 8%. After-tax profits fell 14% year-on-year to US$45.9m as operating margin slipped to 1.15% from 1.36%. Tech Data claimed that the weakening of certain foreign currencies against the US dollar negatively impacted the net sales in a year-on-year comparison by five percentage points. Read full story

Samsung and Amazon take tablet fight to Apple

The latest tablet market data from the numbercrunchers at IDC shows Samsung and Amazon starting to take a bite out of Apple’s market share. IDC estimates that worldwide tablet shipments hit 27.8 million units in the third quarter of 2012 - up 49.5% year-on-year and 6.7% sequentially. The tablet product category is expecting a bumper fourth quarter in terms of unit sales. Read full story
